Description of our model and application areas
This F1 hybrid (First Generation) mouse is the result of a cross between a BALB/cJRj female and an SJL/JRj male.
F1 hybrids are heterozygous at all loci (provided that the parental strains carry different alleles). Like inbred mice, they are genetically and phenotypically uniform. They are also less sensitive to environmental factors than their parental strains.
F1 hybrids are often used for their vigor (resistance and activity). They are of particular interest as a genetic background (vigor and genetic reproducibility) for deleterious mutations, tissue transplantation, hereditary trait studies, and for developing or enhancing the polygenic expression of diseases.
The CSJLF1/JRj strain is more susceptible to EAE (Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis) (90-100%) compared to the BALB/c parental strain (30-70%), with a mortality rate exceeding 50% one week after disease onset (Cua et al., 1999).
